Demonstration of Continuing Professional Competence
Health professionals today are faced with the challenge of keeping abreast of new knowledge and developments in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing healthcare environment. This challenge calls for a commitment to continuous learning and ongoing evaluation of practice standards.
As the authority responsible for licensing nurses and midwives in this State, the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia has a mandate to ensure nurses and midwives maintain their competence to practice in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council's National Competencies for registered and enrolled nurses, midwives, and Nurse Practitioners. The Board believes there are significant advantages in introducing a mechanism to assess the professional competence of nurses and midwives. This initiative has been introduced in a number of States and overseas with reported benefits for the profession, employers and consumers. You may access the National Competency Standards for Registered Nurses, Midwives, Nurse Practitioners and Enrolled Nurses here.GuidelinesOur guidelines are currently being updated and will reflect the national approach.
