About the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia

What We Do

Our role is to set the standards for nursing and midwifery education, practice, registration and professional conduct in Western Australia. We are responsible for regulating the professions of nursing and midwifery and only those who are registered through NMBWA, are entitled to use ‘registered nurse’, ‘enrolled nurse’, ‘midwife’ or ‘nurse practitioner’ in this State.

How We Do It

The Nurses and Midwives Act 2006

The Nurses and Midwives Act 2006 repeals the Nurses Act 1992, provides for the regulation of the practice of nursing and midwifery, the registration of persons as nurses and midwives and makes consequential amendments to various Acts for related purposes.

Functions of NMBWA (Section 10 Nurses and Midwives Act 2006):

· Advise the Minister on matters to which the Act applies

· To administer the scheme of registration under Part 4

· To facilitate and promote public education and research in relation to the practice of nursing and midwifery

· To monitor education in nursing and midwifery and provide advice on that education to the minister and to any person or body involved in that education

· To promote and encourage:

- the continuing education of nurses and midwives in the practice of their professions

- increased levels of skill, knowledge and competence in the practice of nursing and midwifery

- to perform other functions that are conferred on NMBWA under this Act or any other Act.
