Registering to practice

In order to practice, it is a requirement under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2006 that an enrolled nurse, registered nurse, midwife or nurse practitioner is registered with NMBWA.

According to Section 85 of the Act, penalties can be imposed for practicing nursing or midwifery whilst not registered. Equally, under Section 86 employers face penalties for employing an unregistered nurse or midwife. Penalties are $5,000, plus a daily penalty of $200 for a first offence and $10,000, plus a daily penalty of $400 for a second or subsequent offence.

Registration is not only a requirement under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2006. It also helps the NMBWA achieve its mission, by ensuring safe nursing and midwifery practice across the State.
