An integral component of the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia is the promotion of nursing and midwifery research. The Board provides leadership in nursing and midwifery practice through research.

In November 1990, Board first approved an annual Scholarship Fund to provide finances for nursing and midwifery research and major projects to improve nursing and midwifery practice. The  Fellowship Award and Financial Award were designed and allocated $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.

The Education and Research Committee reviewed the Fellowship and Financial Award criteria in July 1997. Following Board approval in August 1997, three new Research Awards were established. These included the Research Fellowship Award, Post Graduate Research Award and Innovation and Development in Nursing Financial Award. In May 2000, Board approved an award for enrolled nurses, the Beryl Baker Award, to support the professional activities of enrolled nurses.
