The Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia has developed and implemented the Scope of Nursing Practice Decision-Making Framework (adapted from Queensland Nursing Council, 1998) for use within all healthcare settings in Western Australia. The Framework provides guidance to individual nurses, the nursing profession, other health personnel and health service providers in relation to principles for clinical decision-making, delegation of nursing and other patient care activities, and expansion of nursing practice.
The Framework defines and describes nursing practice in a way that encompasses all practice settings, allows nurses and the profession to respond to rapid and changing circumstances within the health arena, and provides a mechanism by which nurses can demonstrate accountability for the standard and scope of their practice.
In 2002 Board not only resolved to implement the Scope of Nursing Practice Decision-Making Framework (DMF) within Western Australia but also resolved to support the development of comprehensive educational resources to facilitate understanding and implementation of the DMF.
As a consequence the following educational materials have been developed to facilitate adoption and understanding of the DMF. These materials consist of a:
A comprehensive A4 publication that discusses the SONP DMF in detail.
An abridged version of the SONP DMF Learning Guide.
A pocket sized pictorial guide that illustrates the SONPDMF.
The Powerpoint presentation is currently being updated. We apologise for the inconvenience.
