Nurses & Midwives Act

The Nurses & Midwives Board of Western Australia (NMBWA) cordially advises nurses and midwives and the community of Western Australia that the Nurses and Midwives Act 2006 was proclaimed on the 18 September 2007.

Pursuant to the new Act (2006) NMBWA and all registered and enrolled nurses, midwives and nurse practitioners currently registered with NMBWA will need to comply with and practise in accordance with the Nurses and Midwives Act 2006.

The new Act is significant in that it recognises midwifery as a profession distinct from that of nursing thus allowing midwives to register directly with NMBWA.

The Nurses and Midwives Act 2006 repeals the Nurses Act 1992, provides for the regulation of the practice of nursing and midwifery, the registration of persons as nurses and midwives and makes consequential amendments to various Acts for related purposes.

A significant change is that registrations under the new Act required nurses and midwives registration to expire on 31 December each year, rather than expiring a the end of the month of each member's date of birth.
