Margaret J O Watson Award

 

Biography

Margaret Jean Osborne Watson was a nurse of outstanding excellence and leadership throughout her nursing career.  Margaret had diverse clinical and management roles culminating in her appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Nurses Board (now the Nurses and Midwives Board) of Western Australia in 2000.  Her strong leadership, excellent business acumen and clinical knowledge were attributes that contributed to the effective and efficient management of the Board.

Margaret was involved in various state and national committees and was representative of a number of professional bodies throughout Western Australia and Australia.

Margaret’s contribution to the nursing and midwifery professions was tireless and dedicated at all times. In 2008, the Margaret J O Watson Award was established in recognition of her outstanding work as a clinician and ambassador to the professions of nursing and midwifery.

This Award will provide an opportunity for nurses or midwives to showcase their innovation and vision for the future of the professions.

Purpose

To provide financial assistance for nurses or midwives to:

  • pursue an interstate or overseas innovative project of a kind that is not available in Western Australia
  • undertake research and/or develop initiatives which will improve patient/client outcomes, enhance quality and safety in nursing and midwifery or improve service delivery.

Value

Up to $20,000 per annum

Selection Criteria

  • Current registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia
  • Australian resident currently residing in Western Australia
  • Evidence of contribution to nursing or midwifery
  • Research proposals must reflect current nursing and/or midwifery research priorities and practice

Availability

  • The Margaret J O Watson Award is available annually to nurses and/or midwives
  • Funding is awarded to individuals only, not organisations
  • The Award will be available only once to any recipient
  •  Applicants must be available to attend an interview at the NMBWA in person, if required
  • NMBWA may determine more than one recipient of this Award
  • The Award will be presented at an appropriate event that acknowledges the professions of nursing and midwifery
  • The funding must be utilised within a twelve (12) month period

The application (with six copies) should be typewritten on A4 paper and include:

  • comprehensive Curriculum Vitae which provides details of work and study history
  • a detailed project/research proposal including a budget plan
  • the names and contact details of two nursing and/or midwifery referees that you have sought permission from to be approached.  

Please note:  A final report to NMBWA will be required within three months of completion.
