Welcome to the Nurses & Midwives Board of Western Australia (NMBWA)

Update on Western Australia’s transition to the

National Registration and Accreditation Scheme

As you may be aware, the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (WA) Bill 2010 (National Law) is currently before the WA Legislative Council and the legislation has not become operational in time for Western Australia to participate in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme from 1 July 2010.

This delay means that the NMBWA will continue to operate under the existing WA legislation (the Nurses & Midwives Act 2006), with all of the associated WA registration & accreditation standards and systems.  These include the requirement for nurses and midwives wishing to practice in WA to apply for and/or renew their registration with the NMBWA. For nurses and midwives moving to and from WA, 'Mutual Recognition' registration will continue to operate between WA and the new national scheme, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). For more information in regards to applying for ‘Mutual Recognition’ registration, refer to the ‘Registering to Practice’ section of this website.

The WA Government anticipates that the national legislation will be passed in August 2010 and proclaimed and operational by 18 October 2010.  It is anticipated that this date will be the new date for Western Australia’s entry into the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. In the meantime, you MUST be currently registered with the NMBWA in order to practice nursing and/or midwifery in WA.

For further information on the National Scheme relating to other states please refer to the AHPRA website.

Welcome to the Nurses & Midwives Board of Western Australia (NMBWA) website.
NMBWA is an independent statutory body that regulates nursing and midwifery in Western Australia. In accordance with the WA Nurses and Midwives Act 2006, NMBWA is responsible for protecting the community by ensuring safe standards of nursing and midwifery practice. We achieve this through setting the standards in education, registration and professional conduct.
As an organisation, NMBWA staff value the principles of respect, integrity, justice, excellence, professionalism and accountability and we conduct all of our business based on these fundamental ideals.

Over the last few months, we have been working very hard at improving our on-line services and overall functionality of the NMBWA website. Changes such as introducing a new and faster on-line registration system, career profile pages as well as streamlining overall site navigation are just a few improvements and additions that have been implemented.

A news section featuring access to the latest information from state and national nursing and midwifery organisations hot off the press is also now available from our home page. As always, your feedback is important to us, so if you have any suggestions on how we can further enhance the NMBWA website – please
contact us.
